Many families are struggling just to get by! United Way of Nevada County hopes to alleviate some of the pressure by helping put food on the table. They realized that there was a gap in services, and worked with one of their partner agencies, Interfaith Food Ministry to fill it. Together they designed a program to provide nutritious supplemental food to those people who may not be able to get to food distributions during the weekdays. Food Access Saturday began in May 2017, and so far over 2600 bags of food have been distributed to more than 1045 individuals and families.
The program was originally created to help working individuals and families who need help putting food on their table. Since its inception, the program has grown to encompass a larger population; welcoming others to the table. Through this program, anyone who needs food can pick up healthy groceries, including fresh produce. The program is open to all Nevada County residents. United Way of Nevada County strives to assure individuals and families in Nevada County are able to meet their basic need for food, emergency shelter and access to health care. The Food Access Saturday food distributions take place at 440 Henderson Street, in Grass Valley from 10:00am-noon on the 2nd Saturday of each month.
